If you’re looking to boost website traffic and want to have a go yourself, get started with our Top 10 DIY SEO tips!
First things first… It’s important to think about your target market – i.e. who you want to attract to your website. Then build your website design and SEO strategy around that. Consider every aspect – from the colours. fonts and images, to that all important content, keywords and search phrases.
Research relevant keywords for your site and then write content focusing on these keywords. Make sure the keywords appear in your content, anchor text, title and description tags. Don’t over-use keywords to appeal to the search engines though. Write for your target market and your website content will feel more natural, encouraging visitors and improving rankings.
People come to your website because they are searching for information. If your SEO strategy is effective, they will have found your site with ease… If they then find that your content isn’t relevant to them, or doesn’t answer the questions they have, they will leave as quickly as they arrived.
Remember – content is king when it comes to SEO!
Think about how your users get around your website. If the navigation is “clunky” and doesn’t flow in a logical way, they’ll leave your website and move to another one. Again, consider your target audience here and make your navigation user-friendly. Think about the age group you’re targeting; are they going to be technically savvy, what are their interests etc?
Each page on your website is a potential landing page (the page that people land on first via the search engine results) and should be planned accordingly. Think about relevant keywords on each and every page of your website.
Websites need keyword-rich, user focused content which is regularly updated. This will encourage repeat visits from your target market and ensure that the search engines index your site more often. This in turn will improve your search rankings.
Authority links to and from your website will boost your SEO, but these links should be earned (not bought) and be relevant to your site. This can be achieved by writing relevant guest blog posts for authority sites in your industry.
This is a definite no, no! Do not engage in any “black hat” techniques or trickery such as keyword stuffing or buying inbound links (and avoid any SEO consultants who employ these techniques). The search engine spiders will spot it a mile off and penalise you by blacklisting your website and dropping it from the rankings.
SEO practices are constantly changing, so it’s important to keep up-to-date with what’s going on in this sector. You can educate yourself further via Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools. They’re free, relatively easy to set up and are a great place to start!
